Salt Glazed Pottery What is Salt Glazed Pottery, and What makes it so special?
Variation in Monroe Salt Glazed Pottery Dinnerware Richness, Compelling and Irresistible
There are always variations in the salt glazed dinnerware from a salt glaze kiln. That is the cherished nature of the salt glazing process. Some pieces receive large amounts of salt vapor and others little. That is why some dinnerware will have just a lick of glaze while others are heavily dimpled. It is this variation that makes the Monroe Salt Glazed Pottery Dinnerware so rich and compelling to own and display.
Monroe Salt Works combines the ancient process of salt glazing with beautiful rich surface designs to create distinctive, hand made pottery. Each piece is handcrafted - reflecting their commitment to workmanship, quality and design. From the mixing of the clay and forming of each shape to final inspection, each pot is handled 18 times.
The shapes are straightforward and functional. The handles are comfortable, the sizes ample, and the lips generous. Rims are trimmed on a wheel, handles are pulled by hand, and the designs individually painted.
Their patterns come from what we see around us - Pine cones blowing lightly in a pine tree, crows making a lazy flight, beautiful wildflowers in a field, cattails growing along a marsh, a big moose slurping mouthfuls of grass at the edge of a northern lake.
After the pots are painted, they are dried on racks, waiting for firing. It is the salt glaze formed during the firing process that gives Monroe Salt Works pottery the unique look that has become their trademark.
Salt glazing is a unique process, dating back to 15th century Germany. They load the dried pots into large walk-in kilns, and slowly begin the firing process. Over the next 20 hours the fire builds, until the temperature reaches 2300 degrees Fahrenheit.
Handfuls of rock salt are then thrown into the white-hot kiln. When the salt hits the fire, it explodes and vaporizes. The resulting vapor is what actually combines with the clay to form the glaze during firing.
Because this process is so dynamic, no two pieces are ever exactly the same. Each piece of pottery shows the mark of firing. Each pot has its own individual character and compliments each other beautifully.
Their pottery is durable and chip resistant, dishwasher safe, oven proof and microwave safe. Their pottery is made to be used and enjoyed for many years.
In this world of mass production and faceless products, Monroe Salt Works stands out, because they still make their beautiful pottery by hand.
We think you will certainly agree!
